The Battle is on to save Jean Klock Park
Organizer and BHHS Alumni Carol Drake

Dear Benton Harbor Class of 1970,

My name is Carol Drake and I am Vice President of Friends of Jean Klock Park.

In 2003 a group of six plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against the city of Benton Harbor to stop them from selling a portion of the park for a residential development. Our efforts resulted in a settlement agreement and consent judgement that allowed the development in exchange for protection of the remainder of the park forever.

The ink was barely dry on the consent judgement when it was discovered that the Whirlpool Corporation had plans to build a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course using all of the park, including the dunes, and leaving only the strip of beach.

We are fighting our hearts out trying to save Jean Klock Park and are asking for your help.

First, could you please send this e-mail to as many alumni as possible.

Secondly, go to the website at: www.savejeanklockpark.org to familiarize yourself with the details.

We need everyone to write letters to Governor Granholm, who is backing the proposal, (see Granholm page at website) and other government officials.

Thirdly we need to raise a lot of money to fight this in court.

We just produced a video for You Tube to tell the story. You can view the video at the website.

Anything anyone can do would be extremely appreciated.

Sincerely,

Carol Drake

BHHS CLASS OF 1970 35TH REUNION CANCELLED.

Due to lack of interest in the committee meetings, and a decision from the last meeting, we are canceling the 2005 class reunion. It was voted on by myself, Lila Megna, Marie (Guardino) Arend and Randy Anderson, that if we do not get at least 8-10 people to help out on the committee, we will wait until 2010 which will be our 40th.

Kind words for the leader of the band , The world lost a great man last week with the passing of Bernie Kuschel, former director of Benton Harbor bands for many years. Bernie, loved by all, will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. He touched the lives of countless people. Bernie groomed aspirations and encouraged young music students to excel. He was generous with his time, compassionate with his advice, and always shared his special gift of encouragement.
